3 Reasons You Can't Focus and What to Do About It

By Genevieve Cunningham

You're at work and trying your best to focus on the task at hand. But no matter how hard you try, keeping your focus and finishing your work feels next to impossible. Chances are really good that you've been in this exact scenario. You know what it feels like to lose focus. You know what it feels like for your mind to wander. We all have to deal with this from time to time. But if this lack of focus is a frequent visitor in your life, it might be time to do something about it. If you're having trouble with concentration, take a look at these reasons why your focus is off, followed by some tips to get it back on track.

Your Sleep is Poor

It's almost impossible to focus when you're exhausted. Your brain simply can't keep up. If you haven't been getting much in the rest department, you're not going to have energy, focus, or motivation. And unfortunately, there's little you can do about it until you get some rest. If this sounds like you, make sleep a priority, and the focus will take care of itself.

You Don't Move

Neither your brain nor your body likes inactivity. It likes rest, but not constant inactivity. If you sit behind a desk all day and in front of the TV all night, your brain and body aren't being stimulated properly. This might show up in various ways, but one of the most frustrating side effects is an inability to concentrate on the task at hand. To correct this issue, make time to get active. Go for a walk, go to the gym, or do a few small stretches throughout the day. It doesn't take much to stimulate your brain and enhance your ability to focus.

Your Diet is Suffering

If you want to focus, you have to feed your body properly. Poor nutrition can make the process of logical or critical thinking much more difficult. Take a look at your diet. Is it full of junk food and soda? If it is, then you've found the culprit of your inability to focus. Improve your diet by eliminating junk food and consuming more healthy meats and plenty of vegetables. You'll probably be surprised at how much of a difference this makes in your concentration and productivity, too.

Losing focus on occasion is OK. It happens! But don't let this lack of concentration become the norm. Check for these situations in your life, and then make changes where necessary. With some minor adjustments to your routine and a little determination, you can get your focus back for a more productive life every day.
