How to Manage Anger

By Omer Rashid

We have all seen it, and we have all been there. Anger is something we all experience in our lifetimes. Though anger is considered a normal human emotion, things tend to get problematic when it turns into rage. The thing about anger is that it gives you a false sense of empowerment. If you can develop the ability to identify this pseudo sense of power during your bouts of anger, you will then have better reactions and decisions. But if you have issues with managing anger, it can jeopardize your job and personal relationships. So, it is of utmost importance to devise mechanisms and make plans to counter and curb your anger. Here are a few things you can do to improve your anger management.

Think Positive

You will have to do a little brain training to start thinking positively as soon as you realize you are angry. Anger can make your thoughts become dramatic, and your perception of the intensity of the situation can become overly exaggerated. It will serve you much better if you can replace these negative thoughts with thoughts based on logical reasoning. You should know that bad things happen, but there is always a positive and amicable way out of even the most terrible situations.

Try to Relax

You should have some relaxation techniques ready whenever you find yourself feeling angry. Employing breathing techniques or simply telling yourself repeatedly to calm down can be effective ways of diffusing anger. If you find yourself getting angry frequently, you should start practicing these techniques daily so that you can use them as soon as they are required.

Change Your Environment

If you feel that your thinking is getting clouded and irrational due to your anger, then it's always a good idea to get away from the situation or environment you are in. Moving away from a stressful scenario can save you from the wrong or hurtful expression of your anger. So, if you feel that you won't be able to handle a troubling or provoking situation, you should be looking to have an exit route to avoid any untoward fallout of the frustration and rage you may be feeling. Once you get yourself to calm down, you can address the situation with a level-headed mind. Always keep in mind that knee-jerk reactions to situations are the enemy of wisdom.

Anger management is a great tool to save yourself from any annoying situations you may encounter in your life. You have to live with the fact that anger is a normal emotion, and you can't make it go away permanently, but there are always ways to manage it.
