Lose the Weight for Your Health, not Your Jeans
By Donna Stark
Honeymoons, high school reunions, bathing suit season … these are just a few of the reasons why so many people may want to shed their unwanted pounds … and it’s not bad to want to look good and feel your best for these moments in life, because if they’re encouraging you to be healthier, that’s great! Right? But what happens when that moment is over? What’s going to motivate you to keep the weight off?
Although those reasons aren’t bad in themselves, there are obviously more pressing and compelling reasons that should motivate you to lose some weight. More quality-of-life reasons than do-I-look-good reasons. More it’s-medically-necessary reasons than I-just-want-to-fit-into-my-skinny-jeans reasons. So let’s talk about these other factors, because unless you’re with a doctor 24/7, the odds are that they just aren’t talked about enough. And no bathing suit is ever going to make up for that.
Forget Fashion … Lose the Weight for These Reasons
Sure, being able to look good for your high school reunion is an awesome goal, but that goal may be fleeting and doesn’t promise that the weight will be maintained once the round of drinks at the hotel bar are over. So find some goals that will stick. Ones that will have a significant impact on your life for years ahead. Ones like the following:
- Prevent osteoarthritis - Osteoarthritis is a painful, degenerative joint disease. Some people don’t really have to think about it because they are young and feeling fine. But if you do suffer from it, you tend to think about it a lot more because it can hurt like heck. So lose the extra weight to help prevent osteoarthritis from happening to you.
- Sleep better - Everybody wants to be able to sleep well. In fact, there is nothing like a great night of sleep, is there? But if you are carrying around extra weight, you may not be getting the rest you deserve. More body fat increases your risk of sleep apnea. And just in case you didn’t know, sleep apnea doesn’t just mean that you snore really loud. It means that you stop breathing, over and over again, throughout the night. And that is never good.
- Get sick less often - Are you constantly fighting one cold after another? Do you feel like you are sick more than your coworkers or family are? Well, extra body weight may be the culprit because it has a way of shaking your immune system up, and definitely not for the better! People who carry around those extra pounds are at an increased risk for illnesses and serious health complications, but losing the weight can help and will lead to a healthier, improved immune system.
Let Your Health be the Goal
Losing weight is one of the hardest things to do, but it may be a little bit easier if you focus on how well you will start to feel instead of that momentary blip at some out-of-state hotel. High school reunions come and go, but your health is with you every single day. So treat your body well!
