Simple Tips to Correct Forward Head Posture
By Donna Stark
Are you exhausted by the end of the day? Is your neck always in pain? Do you suffer from frequent headaches? Believe it or not, these conditions may be caused by the position you hold your head. It's called forward head posture, and although that name doesn't have a scary sound to it, it could lead to future nightmares in your health if you aren't careful. Fortunately, your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic can help alleviate some of the pain involved with forward head posture, but you are going to need to help yourself by changing some of your behaviors too. Here are some suggestions.
Lighten Your Load
How heavy is that backpack or bag you use every day? Carrying significant weight in your bags can alter your body's natural balance and may cause your head to lean forward. When your head is not centered over your shoulders, excess force and strain can be exerted on the muscles in your neck and upper back which can lead to pain and discomfort. Spend some time editing your bag to lighten the load you carry, or at the very least, switch the shoulder you carry it on often.
Change Your Desktop
Unfortunately, if you work on a computer or laptop every day, you may be more at risk for this condition. Poor posture and incorrect placement of your monitor can easily cause your head to lean forward, and if you have a long commute to get to work, that risk increases even more! To combat this, try to set up your desktop with ergonomic equipment, pay attention to how you sit throughout the day, and avoid looking down at your phone. Simple changes in the workplace can make a huge difference in how you feel!
Correct Your Posture
It's time to stop slouching and to focus on practicing good posture. When you are sitting, keep both feet on the floor, pull your shoulders back, and maintain a neutral position with your head. It's easy to keep your head in the correct position if you make sure the screen you are looking at is level with your eyes. Also, be sure to take plenty of breaks throughout the day!
Pain-Free Days Ahead
Forward head position can lead to significant pain issues and poor health if left uncorrected, so do your part, make the necessary changes, and see your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic regularly. The combination of all these actions will improve both your days and the quality of your life!
