Is It Time to Make Meditation Work for You?

By Sandy Schroeder

The question of meditation to relieve stress is coming up more and more in our demanding world. When you think of meditation, do you see it working for you? Is this the escape you need? Perhaps you are already meditating, or maybe it just seems like an interesting concept that you have not really sorted out, and might pursue when you have time.

Wherever you are with meditation, you might want to look at all of the possibilities outlined by Drs. Mehmeh Oz and Michael Roizen. Everything from time alone in your garden to a solitary walk through the park can be a meditation.

Take a look at what it means to meditate and see what might fit.

Start with the basics - Meditation calls for these things.

  • A focused time just for you
  • Conscious breathing. For example, inhale for four seconds, and exhale for four to eight seconds.
  • Acceptance of thoughts without judgement, letting them come and go

Now consider these methods.

What mantra meditation really is - Find a hidden spot in your garden or your home and sit quietly for a while, concentrating on your breath and repeating a favorite phrase or key word over and over. This works very well for people who respond to vocal cues.

How a moving meditation works - Go for a walk in the woods. Take one step with each breath and accept the world as it is. Or, spread out your yoga mat early in the morning on the patio, or late in the day in your bedroom, and do one simple pose after another, breathing in and breathing out, letting everything else go.

Picture something you love - People who love images can find calmness and peace as they breathe in and out and visualize a favorite spot at the beach, or on the water. Or they may picture the early morning sky or the vivid red streaks of a fiery sunset. Or it could be as abstract as a favorite color, a burst of yellow and gold or rich reds in burgundy or cranberry.

What May Happen

If one of these meditations appeals to you, many benefits may happen.

  • Daily stress may drop back
  • Anxiety may shrink
  • Self-awareness may grow
  • Mental clarity may sharpen
  • Memory may get a boost
  • Blood pressure may be more manageable
  • Deep sleep with real rest may become a habit
  • Your heart may be healthier
  • Your risk for serious disease may be lowered

Basically, meditation can be all good if it works for you. You might branch out with music, or musical instruments, cooking, sketching, painting, sculpting and knitting. Whatever totally reaches you may become a base for your meditation. Read more about it, experiment with it, or talk to others who have tried it, and make it work for you.
