Ways to Go from Surviving to Thriving
By Sandy Schroeder
We all know the goal is to survive in the current pandemic, but perhaps we should go further.
WellAndGood, com took a long look at the typical survival mode that most of us practice every day. Then they suggested settling into a new routine that feels manageable and meets guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Three Tips to Try
Here's how to move from survival mode into a new temporary routine that works right now.
Design a daily routine that fits you - When survival mode hit, most of us simply fell into a lockstep stay in, wear a mask routine that dulled the day. I did everything that I was supposed to, but seldom felt like smiling or talking. I really forgot to think about all of the little things that I did before the virus hit. Maybe you did too. Here are some reminders to edit to fit the current climate.
- Play with your cat
- Run to the park with your dog
- Listen to your favorite jazz or country fiddles
- Bake cookies or loaves of bread
- Cook pasta for dinner with garlic bread and wine
- Sketch, draw or paint
- Spend time calling longtime friends to reminisce
- Try something new like working with chalk.
Reach out to the most positive people - All of us know someone who always makes us laugh, or has really thoughtful advice to give. Those people often know how to listen, and what to say to keep us smiling. Think about how they do that and try to pass that joy along as you call others too. Who knows how much better you may have made the day for those around you. While you are at it, indulge in trading jokes and passing along the latest silly story you have heard instead of just reciting the latest virus news. Keep it light.
Take a look at what you need - In the midst of survival crisis mode, it's easy to ignore our feelings and just press on ahead, but that only works for so long. Take a moment to level with yourself to see what's bothering you, what your worries are circling around, or how your body is doing. An aching neck, back or shoulder might benefit from a warm shower and some daily stretches. A frazzled mind might benefit from a long talk with a trusted friend or family member. A little relief can go a long way to boost our feelings and keep us balanced.
Wherever you are right now, take a minute to make everything a little better with some thoughtful moves.
