3 Important Signs of Heart Failure

By Genevieve Cunningham

Many parts of our body are incredibly important, but there may not be another that is quite as important as the heart. This big muscle pumps blood throughout our bodies. Once the heart stops ticking, life ceases to exist. Performing activities such as exercise and eating a healthy diet may help prolong the health of the heart. It’s also important to look for any signs of distress and get medical attention whenever necessary. But, what sort of signs should you look for? Take a look at these three signs of heart failure that you don’t want to miss,

Persistent Shortness of Breath

While this phenomenon can also happen due to a problem in the lungs, heart failure may also make it difficult to breathe. Why? Because fluid may build up in the vessels of the heart. When it gets to be too much, that fluid may leak into the lungs, making breathing much more difficult. If you find that shortness of breath is a real problem in your life, it may be time to get to the doctor and get checked out.

Increased Heart Rate

Your heart rate matters a little more than you think. When your heart overworks, it begins to pump harder and faster. This might feel like a hammering in your chest, or it may feel a bit like palpitations. While bouts of a fast heart rate (after exercise or a scare) can be normal, a heart rate that is consistently fast or a heart that beats hard and fast out of nowhere may need some attention.

Excessive Fatigue

While this isn’t generally a symptom all on its own, it might be worth mentioning to your doctor. There are many reasons for excessive fatigue, heart problems being one. The bottom line? It takes a lot of work and energy for your heart to pump blood throughout your body. When the heart is impaired, it requires even more energy. And on top of this, when the heart isn’t pumping at full capacity, it’s likely that you’re not getting quite enough oxygen in your body, which means that you may feel a bit more sleepy and rundown.

The heart is so important in our lives. While it is a good idea to lead a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent as many problems as possible, it’s also a good idea to be aware of any possible indicators of potential poor health. Use these signs as a guide, and always get to your doctor right away if you suspect a problem in the works.
