Getting Those Allergens Out of Your Home
By Donna Stark
Those stuffed animals lining the top of your child's bed are definitely cute to look at, but chances are they are covered with allergens. And if you have any pets in the home, you may want to stay on top of their brushing because they could be triggers to your family's allergies too! If you want to make your home the best it can be, keep reading. Taking the proper steps to keep everyone healthy and comfortable is easier than you think.
Clean the Floors
Just like that leftover glitter from a school project, allergens love to hide in your carpets and collect in the corners of your wood floors, so make sure you are cleaning them at least every week. Vacuum, steam clean, sweep, and mop ... whatever it takes, be sure to do! It will help everyone breathe better in the long run.
Wash the Bedding
Washing sheets, pillowcases, and comforters is another thing you should try to do every week too. Use the hot water setting and dry the bedding in the dryer. Hanging the blankets outside to dry may be energy-efficient, but pollen can easily stick to them, causing more problems in the long run.
Limit the Stuffed Animals
Your little one may love to set up a parade of animals on the bed, but do you think you can talk your kiddo into selecting just one or two for that honored spot? Or have them rotate their friends so each one can have a turn? Stuffed animals are a magnet for allergens so you will want to limit the number on your child's bed. And don't forget to give Rosie the Giraffe and her friends a bath every now and then too!
Dust the House
Stay on top of the dust in the house as much as possible too! Clean the top of your ceiling fans, the hardwood floors under your sofa, your blinds, and every shelf and knickknack in the house. It's best to use a damp cloth while cleaning so you aren't just pushing the dust from one location to the other. And consider getting some air purifiers in the home too. They are a great way to limit the amount of dust and pet dander in the air.
Living Allergen-Free
It's time to take care of all the triggers in your home that cause those scary asthma attacks and asthma symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, and runny noses. With the simple tips above, you can create a healthier, allergen-free home in no time.
