3 Tips for a Mentally Healthy Work Experience

By Genevieve Cunningham

Work can be really difficult for a lot of people. Sometimes it's not the actual process of work that's hard, but rather the mental health strains that come with it. In America, we work long hours and do so with the idea of getting ahead. Unfortunately these long hours don't always lead to more money or a change in our stations in life. It's just more work. And this can certainly cause a decline in our mental well-being. But what can we do to make it better? If you would like to make your work experience a mentally healthy one, take a look at these tips to help you get moving in the right direction today.

Get Organized

Organization is key in so many aspects of life. When it comes to keeping your mental health in check, staying organized can make you feel less chaotic and pressured. If your office is messy, clean it up! If your desk is piled with papers, time for a filing cabinet! The cleaner and more organized your space, the more organized your mind will be, and the less mental anguish you're likely to suffer.

Use Vacation Days

If you want to stay mentally well, you must take time off! Everyone is given vacation days for a reason. Don't sacrifice your days for the sake of the company. Use your days. Use every single day. Go on vacation. Stay home and sleep. Do whatever you need to do to rest, relax, and recharge your batteries. If you're a workaholic, you'll probably be surprised at what a positive difference this makes in your life.

Live First

In America, we live to work. Almost everything revolves around work. But in many other countries -- countries with a higher quality of life and higher reports of happiness -- the idea is that we should work to live. What does this mean? It means that your real life comes first. Sure, work is important and can be incredibly satisfying. But family, friends, home, and play are what make you who you are. Live first, work second, and your mental health is far more likely to stay intact.

Work can be a challenge, and that's OK. Luckily, it's completely possible to protect and even boost your mental health, even while you're on the clock. Use these tips to get started, and enjoy the wonderful boost in health that comes with this important change in your routine and life.
