Signs Your Body Needs a Little Extra Rest

By Genevieve Cunningham

We're all guilty of going 90 to nothing in our everyday lives. We are constantly on the go. We move from one event to another with barely a chance to breathe. We make big demands from our bodies, and though our bodies can mostly keep up, sometimes we push it too far. And when we do, our bodies tell us in big ways! It's our job to listen to our bodies and allow them the rest they need. But how? If you're not in tune with what your body is trying to say, take a look at these three signs that you need to take a rest as soon as possible.

You Can't Shake Soreness

It's OK to be sore sometimes. This is especially true if you've just started a new routine or a new workout. But if you're sore all the time and can't shake it, your body probably needs some time to recuperate. Give yourself a day or two without activity. Allow your muscles to rebuild. Just a small rest may be all you need to finally shake that sore feeling and feel better overall.

Your Heart Rate is Up

After a workout or a stressful event, it's normal for your heart to pound or quicken its pace. But if yours is doing this all the time, you really need to slow down! A heart that is beating more quickly than usual is demanding rest. It might be indicative of illness, stress, excessive activity, or other things. Before you jump to any conclusions, just take a day of rest and see how you feel. If it continues, see a doctor. But a day of rest may be just what your body and heart are asking for.

Your Patience is Non-Existent

Even the most stable people tend to have short fuses when they need sleep. It's OK to be in a bad mood sometimes, especially when you're tired. But if you can't get it under control, you may need to take a day. No one likes to associate with moody people. Get some rest so that you can control your emotions, and everything in your life will seem just a little bit better.

Sometimes we just need to slow down and smell the roses. Though we're often hesitant to take days to "do nothing," we'll function so much better with a little rest in our lives. Use these as signs you need to take it slow, and listen to your body for the best health and happiest life.
