Meal Planning for Successful Weight Loss

By Donna Stark

For so many people, failure is not an option, so they do whatever it takes to find success, and a big part of what it takes is being prepared. They study for that test, they train for the next competition, they practice for their job interview. They understand that by not preparing for what lies ahead of them, they are setting the foundation for exactly what they don't want to happen. Being prepared is critical for successful outcomes, and if you want to be successful with your weight loss goals, you have to be prepared.

Prepare Your Diet

The best way to prepare yourself for weight loss is to start with an efficient meal plan. Meal planning is one of the best ways to keep track of what you eat and how much nutrition you are consuming. It helps to keep your focus on healthy, nutrient-dense meals and off of those fast food diet-killers. But how do you start? Because in conversation, meal planning sounds easy, but when you finally sit down to create one, it can seem very intimidating, can't it? Here are a few tips

  • Figure out your week - A successful meal plan works around your schedule, so take the time to figure out what you are up to in the week ahead. Cross off the nights you are having dinner with clients and be realistic with time constraints on the evenings your kids have practice. Taking a critical look at how your week plays out will help you decide what meals to plan each night.
  • Look for sale and seasonal items - Stay on top of the weekly sales at your local grocery store and try to incorporate those items into your planned meals. The same can be said for seasonal items too, especially if you like to shop at your local farmers market!
  • Pull out your recipes - Now that you have the list of ingredients to buy from the step above, pull out those recipes where they can be used and match them with the best night of the week to make them. Remember to keep your time constraints and availability in mind when you are assigning these days.
  • Shop and prepare - Once you get home from shopping, take the time to prepare your meals for the week ahead. Peel, chop, and slice your fruits and veggies. Brown your beef and cook your chicken. Once you have everything prepped, place it all in their individual bags and get ready for a stress-free week!

Achieving Your Goals

Whatever your health goals are, meal planning is certainly a great way to start achieving them, because in addition to adding more nutrition to your diet, you will also be able to maintain a healthy weight and reduce some of your stress during the week. So start preparing now and find the success you are looking for!
