A Back Friendly Wardrobe: A Quick How-To
By Genevieve Cunningham
Keeping the back healthy and pain-free is a goal for many. We use our backs for everything, so paying attention to health in this area of the body is important. While most know to do things such as exercise, stretch, and use good posture, there are other lesser known things that can be done … things such as checking the wardrobe! Take a look at this quick guide to choosing back friendly clothing, followed by other ways to stay on top of spinal health.
Skip the Super Tight Items
Super tight clothing usually doesn’t look as good as we think it does anyway, so this might be easy! Clothing that is too restrictive can bring about damage to the body including chapped skin, slow or restricted circulation, and even back pain. Make sure that the clothes in your closet are fitted, but not so tight that they pinch, dig into the skin, or leave you feeling overall uncomfortable after a few hours.
Limit the Heels and Flip-Flops
Back pain can begin in the feet, so it’s important to get as much support in this area as possible. Shoes should be comfortable, supportive, and easy to wear for long durations. Two shoes that don’t belong in this category are high heels and flip-flops. It’s easiest to avoid these as much as possible, and if they simply must be worn, limit it to as small a time frame as possible.
Go for Comfort
We can’t always walk around in pajamas or yoga pants, but it’s important to feel comfortable. When we wear clothes that are uncomfortable, we contort our bodies to get some relief. Find clothes that feel and look good at the same time. Avoid anything that hurts after only a few minutes, or that causes constant fidgeting or adjusting to keep the body covered.
Don’t Forget Chiropractic Care
If we’re being realistic, we all know that wearing clothes that are uncomfortable is a part of life. Big event? Important meeting? Fitted ensembles, heavy bags, or uncomfortable shoes might be necessary. Since we can’t completely eliminate these things from life, it can be beneficial to add chiropractic care to the routine. Chiropractors can help eliminate restriction found in the spine, enhance efficiency and function, and keep the back and body healthier as a whole. While keeping a supportive environment (home, work, wardrobe) in back friendly condition is an excellent start, chiropractic care may be the perfect solution for pain-free living.
