How to Stop Negative Thoughts About Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

We all have negative thoughts about different things from time to time. Sometimes we feel negative about work. Sometimes we feel negative about family obligations. But there's one thing that we need to stop feeling negative about. Something that requires positive thought and positive action: our health. It's so easy to get down on ourselves about our health. To think negative thoughts about our body size, our efforts, and the general direction our health is taking. If this is familiar, it's time to take action. If you need to stop thinking negatively about your health so that you can finally turn it around, take a look at these helpful tips.

Replace With Something Positive

This is especially helpful if you tend to have the same negative thoughts over and over again. Most recurring negative thoughts center on appearance. You may constantly express disgust about your midsection or about the number on the scale. If this is a bad habit of yours, consider replacing those negative thoughts with positive ones. Every time you get the urge to bash yourself, say something you like about yourself instead. Maybe you like your hair or your fashion sense. The more positive things you say to yourself, the easier it will get, and the more you'll believe it.

Research the Odds

Sometimes negative thoughts center around things that could go wrong. This happens to people who tend to worry. They get a fever or find a suspicious spot on their body, and then they spiral out of control. They suddenly think they have a rare disease or cancer. If this is you, do some research. Don't do research on all of the bad possibilities, but instead on the odds of that particular bad thing happening. Most of the time, the risk is incredibly low. While this may not completely abate your fears, it can help put your negative thoughts into perspective.

Create Healthy Habits

The healthier your habits, the healthier you're going to feel overall. If you don't currently keep healthy habits, consider creating just one at a time. Focus on a healthy morning routine or an exercise schedule. When you master one habit, move on to another. Over time, you'll be living a healthy life on a daily basis, which lowers the odds of both negative thoughts and the risk of several diseases and conditions.

Once we begin to allow negative thoughts, it can be really hard to stop. But if we want to be healthy and feel good about our lives, we have to turn negative thoughts into positive ones. Use these tips to stop negative thoughts about your health, and feel better in your own skin in no time at all.
