Chiropractic Pain Relief for Pinched Nerve
By Debra Rodzinak
When one of the fine spinal nerves becomes compressed, the term “pinched nerve” is used to describe the pain or numbness that follows. Bone spurs related to osteoarthritis, a herniated disc, or another issue with the lumbar spine can cause a pinched nerve. If a dysfunction of the spinal column’s discs or joints occurs, a pinched nerve can occur. A disc that has aged and become worn out can bulge and put pressure on a nerve.
Treatment Options
The symptoms of a pinched nerve can present as a localized pain or one that travels to different parts of the body. Numbness, tingling, or weakness can also be present in one or more part of the body depending on the severity of the pinched nerve. A variety of treatment options other than the use of drugs or surgery are used to treat a pinched nerve. They include:
- Ice or heat therapy
- Exercise
- Chiropractic
Chiropractic Therapy
Treating all different types of back issues, chiropractors are able to properly diagnose spinal issues and restore a greater range of motion to joints that are injured or stiff. Stiff joints can place excessive stress on the spine, causing pressure to be placed on the nerves. Chiropractic care has been proven to be safe and effective in relieving lower back pain.
Ice or Heat Therapy
Used when symptoms first appear or when injury happens, ice can numb the pain. Ice is very useful in the first three days after pain or discomfort become present. After 72 hours, heat should be used to promote blood flow and ease or relax sore muscles. A combination of the two is often used with 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off as the prescribed time to alternate between ice and heat. Never apply ice or heat directly to bare skin. Instead, wrap the items in a towel or cloth to protect the skin.
Exercise
Short or tight muscles can cause a pinched nerve. Therefore, stretching gently the muscles of the lower back, legs, and pelvis can ease the strain on the lower back. Do not perform any strenuous exercises, but stick with gentle stretches until the pain subsides. Doing too much exercise can aggravate a pinched nerve and lead to longer healing time.
