Creating Your Own Zen Space at Home
By Donna Stark
We all need a special place that we can escape to for our yoga and meditation time, or to simply sit, breathe, and release some stress, but leaving the comforts of our own home and heading to the local yoga studio across town every day can be a drag. Plus, it can actually make us more stressed with the traffic and the rushing to get to class on time, can't it? That's why, for so many people, the idea of having their very own zen space is appealing. Imagine being able to increase the amount of peace in your days simply by walking across the hallway in your home. No more dealing with the clock, the traffic, the bad parking conditions. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
Create Your Space
Having a space in your home where you can go to soothe and recharge your soul can make a huge difference in your life. And it's not that hard to create on your own! Once you decide on the space you want to use, it's easy going from there! So take a breath, and check out some of these tips on how to design that perfect spot for your life.
- Get rid of the clutter - You want your space to invoke a sense of calm, and that's hard to accomplish if you have a ton of clutter, clothes, or paperwork laying in the same area. You need to remove those distractions ... just clear it all out!
- Invest in a padded rug or mat - It makes sense that you want to be comfortable, so invest in a mat or some extra padding so you aren't sitting on a hard, cold floor.
- Repaint if necessary - The spot you decided on is great, but the walls are still painted bright orange and lime green from the time your child went through a neon-color phase. Not very good for relaxing, so consider giving your room a paint job and choose warm, muted tones instead.
- Aromatherapy - Using candles or an aromatherapy diffuser is a great way to enhance the calm environment while getting you in the right mood for relaxation.
- Warm lighting - Choosing the right lighting is critical for the overall experience, so set the mood with low, warm lights or install dimmers on your light switches if possible.
- Mood music - Obviously, you will want to select the appropriate type of music if you even want music at all. Create a playlist ahead of time so you aren't constantly changing the songs and make sure your music doesn't become a distraction.
Enjoy the Quiet
Creating a peaceful space for yoga, meditation, or even some quiet reading is easier to do than you think! And it's so much better than searching for that elusive parking spot at your local yoga studio!
