Enjoying Your Favorite Fall Flavors
By Donna Stark
Food is very often connected to our emotions and if there is anything more that we need during the colder temperatures of fall, it's the feeling of comfort. Comfort foods during the colder seasons are sometimes the only thing that can cut through the chill in our bones. The meals we eat and the beverages we drink become our saving grace when we just can't seem to warm up at all. Fortunately, we have many options to choose from when it comes to comfort foods and a lot of that is attributed to the wonderful flavors of fall. Take a look at some of the favorites below.
Shepherd's Pie
Giving yourself an adult-sized serving of shepherd's pie won't only fill your belly, it will also provide a big chunk of nutrition to your day. With ground beef, chopped carrots, peas, corn, and mashed potatoes, you can't go wrong with this favorite meal.
Sweet Potato Soup
Yes, you can always grab a bowl of sweet potato soup throughout the year, but it takes on a different kind of feel when you are eating it on a chilly, fall night. Sweet potatoes are those colorful gems sitting next to the russet potatoes in the store. You may want to grab some the next time you are shopping because, in addition to having an amazing flavor, they offer plenty of health perks too!
Roasted Chicken and Vegetables
Want to get your family excited for vegetables? Try roasting them! Head to your local market and fill your bags with fresh, seasonal vegetables. Bring them home, chop them up, coat with olive oil and seasonings, and toss them in the oven. A mix of sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrots, beets, broccoli, and kale served with a side of roasted chicken will put smiles on everyone's face.
Anything Pumpkin
Nothing screams "fall comfort foods" more than pumpkin, but did you know that pumpkins aren't vegetables? They actually belong to the fruit family, which may explain why they are such a good choice when it comes time to make a sweet treat! From pies to cookies to butters to hot drinks, fall just wouldn't be fall without the scent of pumpkin in the air.
Time to Get Comfy
There are a lot of things to look forward to once fall comes around but the best part of this season is the food we all tend to love. So get ready! Pull out your sweatshirts and your favorite recipes ... fall is just around the corner!
