Enjoying a Healthy Summer Season

By Donna Stark

After months of patiently waiting for the hotter temperatures to arrive, you can finally pull out your tank tops, grill, and pool noodles. Summer is here and so is the unofficial start to the season of fun! But if you want to keep it fun, you have to remember all of the tips that will keep you and your loved ones healthy and safe. Take a look at the following things to keep in mind while getting ready for all the adventures ahead.

Grilling Season

Ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs ... summer isn't summer if you don't have a grill, or at least know somebody who does, but don't forget to pay extra attention to your diet while enjoying those delicious meals! Make sure you continue to eat in moderation, consume plenty of fruits and vegetables, and try to avoid as many diet-dangerous foods as you can. Choose green salads over pasta dishes, raw vegetables over chips and dip, and water over sodas. Watch your intake of homemade ice cream and baked goods too! If you can, take only a few bites of dessert instead of a few servings.

Road Trips

Nothing seems more perfect in the summer than to hit the road with friends and family, but road trips aren't always what they seem. Keep yours stress-free and healthy with the following suggestions.

  • Rest up - Tired drivers can be as dangerous on the road as drunk drivers, so make sure you get plenty of sleep and rest before you get behind the wheel
  • Pack essentials - Depending on the length of your trip, you may want to consider packing a first aid and roadside assistance kit along with water, snacks, entertainment, and pillows
  • Take breaks - Stopping every hour or so to stretch and take a break is a great way to reduce the risk of stiff joints and back pain

Sun Safety

There are a few essentials you should always have on hand when you and your loved ones are heading outdoors and planning to be in the sun for a while. Here they are.

  • Sunscreen - Keep bottles of sunscreen near your front door, in your cars, and in your pool or beach bag
  • Water bottles - Dehydration can occur very quickly during the summer, so make sure everyone is staying hydrated and carrying a bottle of water with them wherever they go
  • Shade - If you are planning on spending the day next to the water or on the sidelines at your children's games, bring an umbrella or canopy for shade

Enjoying a Healthy Summer Season

The best way to enjoy the summer is to be mindful of everyone's health and safety, so try to incorporate as many of the tips above into your daily routine. Stay safe, get ready for all your summer adventures, and have fun!
