Tips for a Safe Hike

By Donna Stark

No matter what season you are in, and as long as the weather is cooperative, it's always a great time to head outdoors and hit the trails. Hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy nature while reaping some amazing health benefits in the process. It can improve bone density, increase endurance, aid in weight loss, and regulate your blood sugar and blood pressure levels. What's more, hiking can also decrease stress and improve your mood! And when you add a friend or two to go with? Well, it couldn't get any better! But before you lace up your shoes, take a look at the following tips that will help ensure your hike is both productive and safe.

The Right Time

It's always important to plan your hikes during the right time of the day. In the summer, you generally want to avoid the sunniest and hottest hours of the day. But in the winter, those are the hours to shoot for because you definitely don't want the day to end before you finish hiking. If you do plan on being out after the sun sets, make sure you are absolutely prepared for the dark and the colder temperatures.

The Right Conditions

Always, always, always check the weather conditions before leaving your home. If there is a chance of rain or snow, or if the temperatures are dangerously high or low, it may be to your benefit to reschedule. Be sure to pack extra emergency gear as well just in case you get caught up in freak weather conditions.

The Right Location

You would never consider skiing down a black diamond trail without first gaining experience, so don't try to conquer the highest and most dangerous hiking trail without building up to it. Start slow and work your way up to the longer and more challenging trails over time. And remember, when choosing a location to hike, you should always pick a trail based on the ability of the least experienced or able person.

The Right Attire

If you want your hike to be as successful and productive as it can, you need to choose the right clothes and shoes to wear. Your best bet would be to dress in layers so you can modify your level of comfort throughout the hike. You should also choose footwear that has great traction and support while also allowing natural movement of your feet and ankles. If balance is an issue, you may also want to bring some hiking poles.

Head Out on Your Hike

Hiking is a great cardio workout that can be enjoyed throughout the entire year, so don't let the winter chill keep you from missing out. Grab a friend and those hiking poles and set out for a fun day on the trails!
