Self-Care Isn't Selfish!

By Donna Stark

Feeling tired, stressed, or just plain burned out? If so, you may need to take action, and the first move you should make is to prioritize self-care. Self-care encompasses anything and everything you do to support your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. It can be taking a nap, getting a massage, working toward financial freedom, or connecting with loved ones. Whatever it is, it's important to do it often and deliberately. Take a look at some of the benefits that are associated with self-care.

Decreases Stress

There's a lot to be stressed about in today's fast-paced world but that doesn't mean stress needs to get the best of you. Taking a breath, and a step away from life's everyday responsibilities here and there, can make a world of difference in how you feel right now and in the future! So, the next time you feel overwhelmed, head outside for a quick walk, practice some deep breathing exercises, or call a friend and vent.

Improves Sleep

Are you starting to feel like a robot that gets turned on at the crack of dawn and that doesn't get turned off until it's way past your bedtime? Instead of working, working, and working into the late hours of the night, why don't you spend some time in the evening for yourself? Force yourself to unwind and relax by turning all electronic devices off at least an hour before bed. You should also pick up a book, sit on your porch and watch the sunset, or give your body a good stretch. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it's relaxing.

Encourages Physical Activity

One of the great things about prioritizing self-care is that you may become inspired to move your body more. Exercise is a crucial part of optimal well-being and should be incorporated into everyone's daily routine. It helps to reduce stress, increase productivity, enhance sleep, and improve health. Try to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day to achieve maximum results.

Self-Care Isn't Selfish

There's a big misconception among some that self-care is selfish. It's not. Paying attention to your mental, emotional, and physical needs gives you the energy to be your best for those around you. You can't take care of or develop relationships with others if you aren't maintaining a healthy relationship with yourself. So, go ahead and give yourself some time and space. It may end up being the best decision you make for yourself!
