Variety Can Protect Health And Sweeten Life

By Tom Herrin

Those of us in this human family tend to have a few things in common.  Most of us like to be praised.  Most of us like the feeling of success.  Most of us tend to get into some pretty big ruts.  We have a tendency to be creatures of habit.  It is our comfort zone.  We know what to expect and like it that way, whether it's the time we get up and go to bed, what we wear, or what we eat.  One summer when I was in high school, I worked with my dad.  I took the exact same thing for lunch every day, a sausage sandwich with mustard.  My dad asked if wasn’t I getting tired of it.  My answer was no.  I happened to take that the first day and just kept on taking it.  I’ll admit it probably wasn’t the healthiest choice.  Since that time, I have tried to find healthier solutions for eating.  It didn’t take much looking to find out that a variety of fruits and vegetables can vastly improve our health.  It also tastes pretty good. But still, even as a kid, I showed I could be a creature of habit.

Antioxidants Are The Real Deal

When looking for good foods, you need look no further than antioxidants.  The familiar ones are berries, cantaloupes, apricots, carrots, greens, etc.  These and other foods contain things like beta-carotene, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E, which are known to provide various functions to help us improve our immunities and avoid many common problems.  Antioxidants are believed to help fight some cancers, improve blood pressure, and maintain healthy function of our body in general.  Many people use the guide that we should seek to have as much color in our diet as possible.  That seems to be a pretty good guide.

Add Something To Your Cereal

Cereals can be pretty good for you, particularly if they contain a higher fiber.  Rather than adding sugar you might try adding fruit, if you haven’t already.  Raisins, bananas, berries, or almost any kind of dried fruit can really sweeten your cereal while providing many things that you just won’t get with meat and potatoes.  You can get pretty creative and find that you really enjoy the things you just never gave a chance before.

You Will Look Forward To Trying New Things

Once you have added variety to your diet, you will find yourself hooked.  There are so many flavors that you will be looking for new recipes to use them in.  You will find that improving health through diet can be fun and rewarding.  Make it a part of a healthy lifestyle.  You will be glad you did.
