What to Do When You Are Overdue for Healthy Changes
By Sandy Schroeder
The question of change in our lives is a crucial one. Every morning we make decisions that may or may not work out for us. You may add some exercise or wind up working way too many hours. You may eat healthy or just grab a quick lunch and order takeout for dinner. The list goes on and on and our mind and body reflect the effects.
If you would like to weigh less, enjoy more energy, and get a good report when you go to the doctor's, there are some things that will help. Harvard Health offers some tips on making the best daily choices to lower stress, boost health and avoid serious health issues.
One of the biggest issues is activating our goals. We may clearly see what we want, but we have to make that final leap to make it happen. Harvard Health suggests these strategies to take the steps to make everything a reality.
Pick out the things you really want - You may be dying to shake that ongoing feeling of tiredness, or you may want to drop 10 pounds. Make a short list of what you really want.
Start with your first choice - Take one choice at a time. It could be an exercise routine that really works, a healthy diet that has real potential, or some foolproof ways to ease stress. Begin inserting the first choice into your schedule, plans and actions and monitor the changes.
Write down your plan - As your choice takes shape, go into details to make it a reality. At the same time you may want to share it with your spouse or a close friend to get their support. As you develop the choice be clear about why it matters. Your first choice to exercise daily or lose 10 pounds may be the way to improve your overall health or make you look and feel better.
Now think about roadblocks - What will keep your first choice from happening? Old habits, influence of friends and family, or other demands may get in the way and sabotage your efforts.
Come up with some solutions - If you can imagine roadblocks you may also be able to come up with clever ways to make your choice happen. Give some thought to ways to empower your choice in spite of distractions, old habits or other demands or temptations.
Count on success - As you work on your first choice, start thinking about rewards. When you lose that weight or establish a daily exercise groove, you will want to celebrate. Keep a running record of your success and pick some good ways to celebrate the achievements. Enjoy!
