Why You Should Definitely Try Aerial Yoga
By Genevieve Cunningham
Yoga is an incredibly popular exercise in today’s world. Whether you’re into Hatha, Ashtanga, Bikram, or something else, yoga tones the body, burns calories, and improves your overall health in a big way. But honestly, it’s just not for everyone. Some people can’t get into yoga … it’s too slow or too quiet or too boring. If this sounds like you, but you really want all those benefits you’ve heard about, take a look at why you should give the this fun yoga class -- aerial yoga -- a try today.
What is Aerial Yoga?
Aerial yoga is a form of exercise that combines acrobatics with yoga. And much of it is done completely off of the floor. You’ll use a silk -- which is basically like a big hammock -- to hold and move yourself in different positions while hanging from the ceiling. It might also be called Air Yoga or Antigravity Yoga depending on where you’re located and what’s available in your region.
Health Benefits
So is this form of yoga any healthier than any other form? Not particularly. You’ll elongate and stretch the muscles while also gaining strength. You’ll probably learn some deep breathing and calming sequences. You’ll definitely burn calories and improve your overall health. What this form of yoga may have over the others is that it can help to straighten and elongate the spine, leaving you feeling taller and more put together. It’s also quite challenging … and a ton of fun! Those who give it a try tend to really like the class, making it more likely that they’ll go back again.
Personal Accomplishments
Many people feel quite accomplished after a few aerial yoga classes. Why? Because it’s really hard. You’ll challenge both the body and mind in new ways. You will, quite literally, do things that you have never done before … and it will feel scary and invigorating. Giving this exercise a fair shake means pushing yourself to new limits and watching your whole life improve as a result.
If you haven’t given any real consideration to this form of yoga yet, it’s definitely time! Find a class at a local gym or yoga studio, grab a friend, and go have a blast. You may find that yoga is for you after all … as long as you’re hanging from the ceiling and pulling out your inner acrobat for all to see.
