Choose the Right Aerobics for Your Fitness Life

By Genevieve Cunningham

Aerobics is an excellent way to work out the body. And luckily, this form of exercise has come a long way since the days of neon tights and cheesy music. In today’s world, aerobics can give you an intense workout. But it’s important to choose the right kind. Not all classes are created equal, so if you want to join a class to get you fit, you’ll need to be selective in your choice. Take a look at these different forms of aerobics and choose the one that suits your life and goals.

Step Aerobics

This is a form of aerobics that uses a literal step on the ground. The step can be altered to fit your needs. If you need a lower step, it can be adjusted. If you want more of a workout, it can be heightened to a challenging level. You’ll perform a routine (often to fast paced music) that includes high knees, butt kicks, tricep dips, and a whole host of other moves all incorporating the step into the routine. Many find this challenging, especially for the legs since the step adds an extra challenge.

Power Pump

This is an even more challenging approach to aerobics. It’s again performed to fast paced music and follows a certain routine, but power pump includes weights. Many of the moves will be performed holding small dumbbells. The actual weight of the dumbbells will vary depending on your ability and preference. This form of aerobics tends to help people lose weight and tone up, so if this is your goal, power pump may be perfect for you.

Floor Aerobics

This is what most people imagine when they think of aerobics. This is a great choice for people looking for a lower impact, slightly easier routine. You’ll perform a certain routine, just as you do in the other kinds of aerobics, but it will be performed completely on flat ground and without any additional items. It can be modified easily to fit different fitness levels and is safe for complete beginners. You’ll still break a sweat, but it might not be quite as difficult as the other two classes.

All in all, aerobics is a great way to boost health and get in better shape. Before jumping into a class, just make sure that you do your research. Armed with the right knowledge, you can choose the perfect kind of aerobics for your body and ultimate goals.
