3 Ways to Exercise Without a Real Workout
By Genevieve Cunningham
We all know that exercise is important. This isn't some kind of new, groundbreaking advice for staying healthy. Exercise has been a staple of healthy living for as long as any of us can remember. But even though its importance is well known, many of us fail to do it. We just don't like the thought of a gym and sweat and workout gear. It's just not appealing! Luckily, it's possible to get plenty of movement and exercise without suffering through a typical workout. So how can we do it? If you want to get more exercise, but not in the traditional way, take a look at these three things to add to your life as soon as possible.
Start a Garden
There are so many benefits to starting a garden at your home. First, it feels really good -- especially in mind and soul -- to grow living things. It's nice to breathe in the fresh air and watch something come to life through your hard work. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Gardening is hard work, which is why it's a great way to get exercise. To grow a successful garden, you'll spend a little time every day weeding, bending, pulling, raking, and using your muscles to do all sorts of important tasks. If you want a good workout without thinking about it planting a garden will almost assuredly work.
Enjoy Nature Walks
If you don't quite as much work as is required in a garden, just get outside for some walks in nature. You can take a camera and take pictures. You can grab a book and learn about local plant life. Or you could simply stroll through nature and soak in the good vibes. You'll get exercise, burn some calories, soak in Vitamin D, and breathe fresh air. It's a nice way to work out without causing more stress to either the body or the mind.
Play a Game
When we play games, we're having fun. And when we have fun, it feels so much less like work! Grab a soccer ball or a basketball or a golf ball and clubs, and go outside with your family and friends. If sports aren't your thing, you could play tag with your kids. You could play horseshoes or croquet. You may not burn as many calories as a hardcore gym workout, but you'll still keep your body moving and working toward better health.
Not everyone is cut out for the gym life. Not everyone likes the heavy equipment and the sweaty people and the atmosphere. And that's OK! The key is not to join a gym -- it's to keep moving! Use these tips to get plenty of exercise in your daily life, and experience better health as activity in your life picks up.
