Stress Relief Tips for the Busy Parent

By Rachel Shouse

Being a parent is the hardest and most rewarding job anyone could have. It's a huge responsibility and can feel overwhelming at times. You combine kids and regular life problems and you've got yourself a regular mess. Fortunately, times are changing and more awareness is being spread about how people talk to each other. No one can sensor everything they ever say of course. More people are starting to understand that while we know we're blessed, there are also really hard times. During those times it's important to make sure that you're taking care of yourself. Developing an enjoyable routine, seeking professional help, and surrounding yourself with good people are great ways to keep up with your own needs.

Developing an Enjoyable Routine

When times get hard it can be a struggle to just get out of bed in the morning. If you start feeling that way try developing a new routine, one that you look forward to. It may be hard sometimes to find time for yourself and make your happiness a priority.

Think of it this way, if you were to neglect your car you would see slow but steady problems. Don't get oil changes and all of a sudden you're dealing with serious engine issues. You're no different. If you don't take the time for yourself that you genuinely need, as a human being, you won't be able to take care of your kids as well as you could.

Seeking Professional Help

It can be scary to ask for help. You're making yourself vulnerable to another human. You know how imperfect humans are and know how capable they are of judging you. These are all normal feelings. As a parent, you've seen a lot. Situations you never would've thought of are suddenly occurring right before your very eyes. When those situations recur you're less phased. Same goes for those with professions in mental health. There's nothing you've got that they haven't seen.

Surrounding Yourself With Good People

The environment you hang around in has a real effect on you. When you feel stressed you go through more than just an uncomfortable mental situation. Stress can cause physical symptoms as well. So, that being said, why would anyone put themselves through that? Simply put, no one's perfect. If you happen to notice that you're not feeling yourself around a certain person, maybe take a break.

Surround yourself with people who you love and who love you in return. Don't feel obligated to keep someone in your life if it's hurting you. Sometimes you need to put yourself first. Having other friends that are good parents can be such a blessing. So go find good friends and treat them the way you want to be treated.
