Excuse-Proof Your Workout!

By Sara Butler

When you first begin a new workout routine, you’re feeling spunky and ready to get started! But as time goes on, finding the motivation to get your workout done between work, home, and classes can be pretty difficult. The realities of life don’t lend themselves to stoking your desire to work out. The best thing you can do is arm yourself with a few strategies to help you overcome your workout excuses!

Excuse No. 1: You’re Too Tired to Exercise

The couch may be calling your name at the end of a long day, but there are ways you can resist its siren call. Try to take exercise clothing with you to work or school so you can change right before you leave for the day. That way you can head to the gym straight away or go for a walk when you pull into the driveway – without ever having the chance to see the couch.

If you find that working out in the evening just doesn’t work, then work out in the morning. Many gyms and workout facilities offer early morning hours or classes to help you take advantage of your energy in the a.m.

Excuse No. 2: You Can’t Find an Hour to Exercise

Who says you have to work out for an hour nonstop? No one! If you can piece together a workout over the course of a day, then that’s what you should do instead of just forgetting the whole thing. Break up 60 minutes of daily exercise by taking a short walk after you get home from work combined with a walk at lunch. Or maybe hit the gym for a quick 30 swear session on your way home. There’s no rule that exercise has to happen all at once, so do what you can to work it into your day.

Excuse No. 3: You’d Rather Spend Time with Family and Friends

There’s no question that spending quality time with friends and family is important to your health and wellness – but so is exercise! There’s no reason why you can’t combine spending time with the people in your life who are important to you and exercise.

Invite your friends to work out with you. Play a rousing round of Frisbee golf or go for a walk with your kids when you get home from work. Inviting your family to get exercise with you in order to strengthen your bond and spend quality time together is good for the whole clan.

Exercise is important, so don't make excuses!
