Sleeping Better With Low Back Pain

By Sara Butler

Back pain can strike anyone at any time. In fact, 80 percent of people will have back pain in their lives; for a lot of those people that pain will be at its worst at night due to factors such as a poor mattress, stress, or too much sitting during the day. If you're dealing with lower back pain at night, then here are a few tips from the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic to help you sleep with less pain.

Reduce Your Stress

You may not realize it, but stress can impact your life in a lot of ways -- one of which is pain. When you're stressed, your muscles get tense and the tenseness can lead directly to pain. It's important to find ways to reduce stress in your everyday life in order to sleep better at night -- especially if the pain is a problem for you.

See the Chiropractor

Back pain that makes it difficult for you to sleep may be the result of a joint restriction or dysfunction. That's why it's crucial for you to bring any pain you're experiencing to the attention of the chiropractor. Regular treatments at the chiropractor can help to remove those dysfunctions and restrictions to help you experience less pain and ultimately sleep better at night.

Exercise

Regular exercise promotes good health, but it also has some benefits for back pain. When you work out regularly, even doing something as simple as a walk in the evening after dinner, it helps to reduce stress, strengthen muscles, and release endorphins that help you to deal with pain. Also, an exercise such as yoga is great for back pain because it stretches your muscles to help reduce tension and pain. Try doing some yoga when you get up each morning to stretch your muscles in anticipation for the day ahead. Yoga before bed can help you to relax in anticipation of bedtime.

Turn Off Electronics

The blue light given off by your electronics is not conducive to good night's rest. But it's not simply the light that causes a problem when it's time for bed. Craning your neck or holding your body off balance in order to look at your tablet or smartphone can make your back pain at night worse. So, put those electronics away in order to go to sleep easier and with less pain.
