Get Moving to Stay Healthy

By Rachel Carver

We sit a lot. We work at our desks and relax in the evening on the couch. But a sedentary life can be detrimental to our health.

The chiropractors at your neighborhood Joint Chiropractic clinic encourage everyone to be intentional about movement. However, it can be hard to increase movement, especially when dealing with long periods of inactivity.

What Happens When We Are Inactive?

Short periods of inactivity will usually not affect our health. We can become inactive for many reasons, including:

  • Injury
  • Surgery
  • Illness

Long periods of inactivity can lead to fatigue, tiredness, and lethargy. Too much sitting can also grow your waistline and increase your chance of developing joint pain. This is why regular movement is so important.

Here are some ways to easily increase movement.

Walk

Regular walking can improve mood, increase energy, and raise your step count. Walk outside when weather allows. Start with a short walk and increase your distance when you are ready.

Take Intentional Breaks From Sitting

How often do you get involved in a project at your desk and let time slip away? Think about your day. Schedule short breaks when you can stand and move around. Maybe you can pace your office during a phone call, or walk a lap after your morning meeting. Set alarms to remind yourself when it is time to move. This approach is great for people who are just starting to increase movement or who work long hours at a desk and find it hard to exercise.

Enjoy Physical Activity

If you tell yourself you will walk on the treadmill each day and despise the activity, you will most likely stop doing it. Find a physical activity you enjoy. Maybe you enjoy swimming or cycling. Sign up for group fitness classes to keep yourself accountable. The key is to find a way to consistently move more every day.

Keep the following in mind when starting intentional movement.

  • Be safe - Don't push yourself too hard to avoid injury
  • Listen to your body - Learn your own limits and what works for you
  • Stay motivated - Do what you need to for motivation; take a rest day, try a new walk path, or change your workout time

Sometimes, the hardest part of becoming active is to start. This can be daunting if you have joint pain or are recovering from an injury. If you want to start moving but are unsure about where to begin, head on into The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you. The Joint team will listen to your concerns, evaluate your unique situation, and come up with a plan to get you moving more.
