Step Away From Technology

By Donna Stark

It keeps you company throughout the day. It helps you plan events, capture special moments, and reach your fitness goals. It's become so intertwined in your life that it's hard to not give it attention, but giving it that attention has its downside. The reliance we have on our phones can cause problems with sleep, productivity, moods, and relationships. Basically, even with all the good it has brought, this wonder of a tool has become quite disruptive, and many of us may need to take a step away. Here are some ways you can do so.

Delete Your Apps

Perhaps you are losing track of your time when on your phone because you have too many apps to look through? Maybe it would be good if you got rid of a few of them. Set aside some time to go through each and every app on your phone (and I mean all of them) to see if there are any you can delete. Look for the ones that truly suck your time away, make you feel bad, or raise your stress levels ... and don't feel guilty about deleting them. Remember, if you find that you miss any of them, you can always put them back.

Organize Your Phone

If you have to swipe through five screens to get to your banking app or work email, you are increasing the risk of becoming distracted along the way. And when you get distracted on the phone, you know what that means, don't you? Five hours will pass before you come up for air again, right? A way to reduce the distractions is to organize your apps after you delete the ones you no longer want. Put the most important, or used, ones on your home screen so you can get right where you need to be in seconds.

Leave it Behind

Do you wish for the days when you weren't on call 24/7? If so, intentionally leave your phone behind when you feel comfortable doing so. Running into the drugstore to pick up a bottle of shampoo? Walking the dog to the mailbox down the street? These are perfect examples of times when you could probably do without your phone. And, by taking these types of baby steps, you may end up being comfortable going an entire afternoon without your phone!

Stepping Away From Technology

It's time to reevaluate your bond with the device that spends every single moment of the day with you. With the simple tips above, you can easily start managing the minutes and hours you spend on your phone and improve the quality of your life in the process.
