Natural Ways to Stay Awake

By Sara Butler

Feeling a bit foggy during the day happens to many people. Your first thought may be to reach for a cup of coffee or a cup of tea and wait for the caffeine to kick you into high gear, but it’s important to realize that’s only a short-term solution to your alertness issues. Plus, the crash you experience after the caffeine wears off can leave you in a worse place than where you started. The best thing you can do is apply natural ways to boost your energy and keep you alert all day. Here are a few natural strategies you can use for a pick-me-up.

Exercise

It may sound counterintuitive, but exercise is a great strategy for more energy overall, not less. When you’re feeling tired, going for a walk or doing some light cardio can help give you a little more pep, improving circulation and getting more oxygen to your brain.

You don’t have to go crazy, a few jumping jacks can do the trick. Even a few simple stretches can help give you a boost when you’re feeling like you’re out of energy.

Have a Cool Glass of Water

Sometimes the simple things turn out to be the most effective -- and cold water is one of those! When you’re feeling depleted, a cold glass of water triggers adrenaline to be released and increase blood flow to your brain. Try drinking a glass first thing in the morning before coffee, as well as with meals. It will help give you some energy as well as help you stay hydrated all day.

A Cold Shower

Speaking of cold water, it wouldn’t hurt to douse yourself with some too! A cold shower can help you wake up. It can supply you with the energy you need to tackle the day ahead. At work, this may be a problem but splashing some cold water on your face can have the same effect and be a great way to relieve some stress while you’re at it.

Get Some Sun

The artificial lighting at the office isn’t doing you any favors when it comes to energy levels. If you find yourself in the middle of a mid-afternoon slump, try to get some natural sunlight. Fresh air, warm sun, and some deep breathing are sure to get you set up to take on the rest of the day.

You don’t have to resort to sugar or coffee to give you a lift. Find a natural and healthy way to increase your energy!
