How to Care for Your Body Through Illness

By Genevieve Cunningham

Everyone experiences illness. From the time that we're very little, we suffer from various colds and stomach bugs and infections. It's completely normal. As kids, we have people to take care of us when we're sick -- mom and dad, grandparents, even the school nurse. But as adults, it's all on us. We have to find ways to go to work, take care of our families, and still nurse ourselves back to full health. So how do we do it? What do we need to make sure is included in our self-care? If you're feeling a bit down, take a look at these tips for seeing your own body through illness and getting back to full health sooner rather than later.

Rest, Rest, and More Rest

There's no way to get around your body's need for rest when you're sick. You just won't heal if you don't allow for rest. Whether you have to take off work, ask someone to watch your kids, or simply lock your bedroom door, do whatever it takes to get some rest. If you don't get the rest you need, your body will continue to be rundown, and you'll be susceptible to even more illness.

Fluids

Illness dehydrates the body. And when the body is dehydrated, it weakens even further. To help your body stay well enough to continue to fight off the illness, it's imperative that you stay hydrated. Try to drink clear liquids or teas that are gentle on the stomach. You can also try drinks that contain electrolytes -- things such as Pedialyte. If your stomach is upset, try a clear soda. This is a very important step in the healing process, so make it a priority if you want to get better quickly.

No Stress

The last thing you need when you're sick is more stress. Try to leave any stressful things alone while you're healing. Get in bed with Netflix -- it's the perfect excuse for a binge session! Don't think about work or finances or any extracurricular activities. Let other people help you while you stay home and give your body a chance to heal properly.

If you're sick, you have to take care of yourself. You have to give yourself time to heal, and you have to treat yourself gently. Use these tips to make it through time of illness. With the right self-care, you'll be back to your healthy self in no time at all.
