Choosing Cherries for a Clean Eating Snack

By Brandi Goodman

February is National Cherry Month, making now the time to learn precisely why the fruit is so popular. Clean eating involves only choosing healthy foods that have not been processed or refined. Cherries should be on the top of that list due to all their amazing benefits.

Antioxidant Properties

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in cherries work together to reduce inflammation and fight oxidative stress that stems from chemicals and other harmful sources. Cherries contain polyphenols and Vitamin C that fight bad cells within the body and boost the immune system. Just one cup contains at least 10 grams of Vitamin C, depending on the type of cherry you're consuming.

Reducing Inflammatory Diseases

The anti-inflammatory properties that cherries possess can also help reduce certain inflammatory diseases. This means eliminating pain from arthritis and cardiovascular disease. You may even have a chance at preventing these problems altogether with cherries and other health foods in your daily meal plan.

Ideal Source of Potassium

Potassium is often said to come from bananas. Though this is true, plenty of other sources exist as well and cherries are one of them. One cup of red cherries contain 268 milligrams of potassium. If you're looking to combat the effects of sodium or maintain your blood pressure, cherries are a helpful choice.

Fiber-Rich Food

People need to consume more fiber-rich foods if they hope to improve their digestive tracts and keep their chances for developing certain diseases low. The more dietary fiber consumed, the better ability your body has at warding off symptoms of diabetes and heart disease. A cup of sweet cherries contains more than 3 grams of fiber.

Choose Both Kinds of Cherries

Cherries come in two main varieties. Sweet versus tart are the distinct options you'll typically see. It's important to choose both because each offers its own set of benefits. While tart cherries may have better antioxidant properties, sweet cherries are higher in fiber, potassium, and other nutrients. Consuming both versions will give you the best of both worlds.

Cherries are a great clean eating snack that should be added to everyone's weekly menu. Enjoy some fresh black or red cherries from the supermarket and experience a boost in health. Even if you don't like eating cherries whole, you can still add the fruit to other dishes or drink it in juice form instead.
