Don't Let the Summer Heat Get You Down

By Brandi Goodman

One of the downfalls of summer is how hot it can get. Too much heat can be detrimental to your health and well-being. You need to be sure you're staying safe and protected so the summer heat doesn't get you down. Here's how.

Stay Hydrated

Your body loses fluid as you sweat. You need to make this up by drinking lots of water and staying hydrated. If you don't, you can quickly begin to feel unwell. Dehydration can leave you feeling dizzy and lightheaded. Make sure you keep a bottle of water with you if you plan on being outdoors so you can always replenish what you're losing.

Stay in the Shade

If you do have to be outside, at least try to stay in the shade. Say you'll be attending an outdoor event. Find a spot under a tree or bring an umbrella that can shield you from the harsh sun. You'll be less likely to get overheated if you're staying where it's shady and not in direct sunlight. A hat and sunglasses can help as well.

Get Plenty of Rest

Your body needs rest if you hope to stay energized and able to tackle the day. Make sure you're getting plenty of sleep at night and maintaining a routine so you can always wake up feeling alert and ready. The heat can quickly leave you feeling tired and worn out. You may even need a short nap during the day to give you that extra boost again to make it through the remainder of your evening.

Swim

Swimming is a great exercise option any time of year. During the summer, it's especially helpful because you can get in a workout without sweating up a storm. You'll be able to stay cool and keep your body moving, sun or not. You don't have to be outdoors, either. Find a local indoor pool that allows you to swim so the weather doesn't impact anything.

Exercise also boosts endorphins. You'll be improving your mood and enchanting your mental health as well. It won't just be your physical health that benefits when you're swimming all summer.

The summer heat can leave you feeling sluggish, sick, and just not like yourself. Do what you can to beat it and maintain your well-being all season long. You'll feel much better if you can stay hydrated, get lots of rest, and find time in the shade rather than sitting under the beating sun.
