How to Cut Calories Before the Cold

By Genevieve Cunnningham

Winter is coming, winter is coming!. OK, that might be a little dramatic, especially if you live in the south. But, the cooler air and gray skies are definitely on their way. Even if you’re not expecting sub-freezing temperatures or ice and snow in your area, the cool air brings a welcome change, and it also brings a hearty appetite. The cooler air makes us hungry, and with the amazing menus that come about in the winter, cutting back is incredibly difficult. Because of this, the winter is a time when we all tend to pack on a few pounds. If you’d like to make it through the cooler weather without piling on the pounds, take a look at these ways to cut back now.

Fuel Up on Protein

We tend to eat fairly carb-heavy in the winter. It keeps us warmer and is part of the comfort foods that we love so much. But too many carbs almost always leads to more weight. Instead of waiting until the winter to try to cut carbs, go ahead and cut them now, and instead fill your plate with protein. You may find that you actually lose a few pounds before winter even arrives, which may allow you to eat a few of those favorite comfort foods on a cool winter night.

Drink Water or Tea

When most of us think of being dehydrated, we imagine the summer. We imagine the scorching heat and endless sweat. But what may surprise you is that a large number of people actually become dehydrated in the winter. We don’t tend to realize as quickly that we need water, and so the dehydration can linger longer. Make it a point to drink more water starting today. And when the cool air arrives and water doesn’t have it’s appeal, have a water-loaded drink, such as tea or cider, ready to take its place.

Practice Healthy Dessert Recipes

One reason that so many tend to gain weight in the winter is because of the delicious holiday foods. And one of the best parts? Dessert! Before that holiday party is upon you, go ahead and start practicing some healthier dessert options now. Then, when that first party arrives, you’ll be armed and ready with some delicious and healthy desserts for everyone to enjoy.

You don’t have to give up all of your favorite winter treats in order to stay fit and healthy. But if you plan ahead, you can save yourself from packing on too many pounds this winter. Just use these tips to get started. Then, be patient with yourself, stick to it, and enjoy the season as it comes.
