Supplements That Promote Strong and Healthy Bones

By Genevieve Cunningham

Taking supplements can be a good idea as a way to improve nutrition and diet. For most people, a simple multivitamin does the trick. But for others, it might be a good idea to focus on one area or another. Want a stronger immune system? It might be good to look for Vitamin C. Trying to boost the health of the joints? Perhaps look to fish oil. But what about the bones? We use the bones all day every day, but we don’t give much thought to their individual health. To make bone health a priority, take a look at these supplements that can protect and strengthen the bones long-term.

Calcium

Perhaps the most famous bone supporting supplement is calcium. Calcium helps to keep the bones strong and can even prevent osteoporosis in old age. While this can certainly be taken in supplement form, it can also be found in plenty of foods. Milk, cheese, seafood, and dark leafy greens are great options for getting enough calcium in your daily diet.

Vitamin D

This vitamin is essential to a healthy skeletal system. It’s a little lesser known than calcium, but equally important. When the body lacks Vitamin D, it can be felt through aches and pains deep within the bones. This vitamin isn’t found in very many foods, so getting a supplement or simply getting out in the sun are better options for getting enough. Before going crazy with a supplement, have your levels checked at the doctor so that your body gets the right amount for its specific needs.

Vitamin K

This is a vitamin that is rarely discussed. It is essential for the blood, and indirectly, it’s also important for the bones. Vitamin K can help bind calcium within the bones, which then provides support and strength. Without this vitamin, the calcium may not work as effectively as it can or should. It is often recommended to postmenopausal women, or other individuals that are at risk for osteoporosis. To get Vitamin K, look for a supplement at your local pharmacy or eat foods such as kale, broccoli, cabbage, and prunes.

We only get one set of bones throughout our lives, so it’s incredibly important to keep them as healthy and strong as possible. Focusing on diet and fueling the body with the proper nutrients is the perfect place to begin when it comes to the bones. Use these tips to get started, and enjoy healthy bones now and long into the future.
