Secrets You Should Definitely Know About Exercise

By Genevieve Cunningham

When many people think about trying to formulate and maintain an exercise routine, they get a little overwhelmed. There’s so much information! How are we supposed to know what to take to heart and what to ignore? Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be complicated at all. It can actually be quite simple. If you’re in the muck of the workout madness, and you just want to get yourself moving in the right direction, take a look at these secrets that you should really know before you begin.

More is Not Always More

Far too many people make this mistake. They believe that the more time they spend in the gym, the faster and more pronounced the results will be. But this is not always the case. Many times, more time does not equal more results when it comes to working out. Good form and consistency go much further than hours spent. Focus on a consistent, challenging routine that you can keep up, and don’t worry about the amount of time you spend. This, in the long run, will get you much closer to your goals.

Your Diet is Actually More Important

Here’s the harsh truth. What you eat is far more important for weight loss than how you work out. Exercise is definitely a good thing. It builds muscles and endurance. It helps you maintain balance and stability. But you can’t outwork a bad diet. You just can’t. If weight loss is the goal, focus on the food first, and make exercise an added bonus.

No Pain No Gain is a Myth

You have undoubtedly heard the old adage “no pain, no gain.” While the sentiment behind this might be true -- you have to work to see results -- you don’t actually have to feel pain. Just because you’re not sore does not mean you didn’t get a good workout. Make a plan and stick to it. If you’re not feeling pain, but you’re challenging yourself, then chances are good that you’ll see results.

Exercise is definitely important. Regular exercise can significantly improve quality of life, and it certainly shouldn’t be forgotten. But it’s important to be honest and realistic about its effects. If we go into our routine with an open mind and armed with knowledge, we’ll be more likely to stick with it through the tough times and make it a successful part of our everyday lives.
