Ending Insomnia: 3 Tips That Might Actually Work

By Genevieve Cunningham

Insomnia can be quite the health and mood killer. If you've never dealt with the inability to sleep, you're incredibly lucky. Most people suffer with some form of insomnia at one point or another -- whether it's mild or severe. But no matter whether your insomnia is short-lived or chronic, there's no doubt that it's frustrating. While an occasional night of poor sleep likely won't do much damage, prolonged insomnia can really start to cause problems. If you can't sleep and you're ready to turn the problem around, take a look at these answers to beating insomnia once and for all.

Rearrange Your Schedule

The first thing that you should try is rearranging your schedule. Our bodies have natural sleep rhythms. If we mess these rhythms up, it's harder to find sleep. Start by setting a wake-up time and bedtime every single day, and then sticking to it. You should also schedule your relaxation time and work time. Stick to your schedule! Over time, your body may get used to your strict schedule and eventually allow itself to relax and sleep at the day's end.

Adjust Your Diet

It's entirely possible that your diet is causing your sleeping problems. Are you drinking caffeine in the afternoon? Are you eating junk food late at night? Are you skipping healthy food altogether? Many are surprised to find how much of an impact diet has on overall health and function. After you set your schedule, make your diet as healthy as possible to encourage both health and sleep.

See a Doctor

While many people like to avoid medication, sometimes seeing the doctor is the best choice. You have to get sleep, and if nothing is working, you may need professional help. Don't assume that the doctor will jump straight to medication. While it's possible that meds will be in your future, the doctor may suggest an array of other lifestyle changes first. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Your sleep and overall health greatly depend on it.

Insomnia can be a real bummer -- in your health, at work, with friends, and in life. Without good sleep, life is just harder. And eventually, the lack of sleep will ruin your health. Use these tips to help beat the insomnia and get better sleep as soon as possible.
