How to Chisel Away Stubborn Fat
By Genevieve Cunningham
Most people have the generic goal of weight loss. The majority of us have a few extra pounds that we carry around. But what do people really mean when they say they want to lose weight? Is it really the number on the scale? Or is it more about the way that they look and feel? Chances are good that you fall into the latter category. Sure, watching the numbers on the scale dip is a wonderful feeling, but it’s not quite as good as watching fat melt off and exposing muscles underneath. If you want to lose weight, or more specifically melt fat and look your best, take a look at these tips.
Build Your Muscle
Once you finally get the fat to leave, you’ll want something to show off underneath. To get your muscles strong, sculpted, and ready for show and tell, begin a regular weight lifting routine. You can start with lighter weights, and work your way toward heavier weights. This may make the scale go up initially, as muscles are more dense than fat, and therefore weigh more in the same amount of space. But don’t get discouraged. Stick with it and these muscles will not only be ready to be shown off, but they’ll also help burn more fat to get you there faster.
Lower Caloric Intake
You have to take in fewer calories if you want to burn fat. More specifically, you’ll have to burn more calories than you take in. A good way to get started is to add up your current daily intake. Once you have this number, take it to your doctor and ask how much is necessary for your lifestyle and body type. With a professional’s help, you can get a target daily caloric intake. You’ll then work to eat fewer calories than this in order to create a deficit. The longer you stick with a deficit, the more excess weight your body will burn, and the faster you’ll notice the difference.
Cardio is necessary to help burn calories. It’s easier to stay under your caloric goal if you also work to burn calories throughout the day. Running, walking, swimming, aerobics, kickboxing … the options are endless. Just find something that you like, stick with it, and the fat will be gone before you know it.
While weight loss is an admirable goal, it’s OK to be more specific, as well. Want to sculpt away fat? Great! Ready to see your abs? Awesome! Use these tips to get you started down a healthier path, and to get you a little closer to your dream body every day.
