Healthy Food Swaps to Try

By Stepy Kamei

Those of us who generally stick to a traditional Western diet are more than likely used to consuming foods which may be delicious but aren't necessarily the healthiest options for us. The truth that so few of us want to admit is that it is possible for healthy foods to taste good as well, if only we gave them a chance. For many of us, this chance may have to come in the form of making certain swaps of our favorite foods.

It may seem overwhelming or downright confusing at first, but once you begin to see the benefits of swapping out unhealthy foods for much healthier and more nutritious options, you'll wonder why you waited this long to do so. It may be a bit of a challenge at first, I'll concede that. However, any change to a person's lifestyle or habits, especially when it comes to diet, can be difficult to get used to. All it takes is a bit of motivation and faith in the positive outcome, and you'll see how much better you'll feel as you begin to eat healthier meals and snacks. Making these simple yet deliciously beneficial food swaps is one great way to get started on the path to better health and wellness.

Cottage Cheese for Other Fattening Dairy Products

Whether you are sensitive or allergic to dairy products, or you know they contribute to poor skin health and expand your waistline, you should consider swapping out dairy products for cottage cheese instead. Cottage cheese is mild in taste and fat, yet it contains a great flavor, loads of protein, and a texture which makes it an ideal substitute for thickening agents in all kinds of classic and favorite recipes.

Whole Wheat and Whole Grains

Many starchy products we prepare for ourselves on a regular basis -- pasta, bread, noodles, etc. -- tend to be bleached and refined to the point where they have lost almost all of their nutritional content and value. This doesn't exactly make them ideal food products for us to consume. Switch to the whole grain or whole wheat versions of your favorite starchy foods to start upping your intake of protein and fiber -- both of which can help you feel fuller for longer, which can help you eat less and even lose weight in the long run.

Olive Oil for Butter

Cooking with butter is a common practice in many households, yet it would do our collective health better to swap this out with olive oil instead. Olive oil contains healthy fats which won't clog the arteries, but instead will provide a healthy base for your favorite meals.
