How Stress Impacts Your Life

By Rachel Shouse

Stress. One of the silent killers. The range of symptoms caused by stress is immense. You could develop a rash, anxiety disorder, or you could hyperventilate in extreme cases. Each of those symptoms affect different areas of your body. Learning how to cope with stress is really important, as I'm sure you can understand given the possible side effects. Learning how to reduce your stress, eliminate it, and/or cope with it are great tools to learn and implement during high stress times.

Reduce Your Stress Levels

There are going to be times when your stress levels are outside of your control. The best thing to do in those types of situations is implement some stress relief tools. Let's say you have a tough job and it takes a lot out of you, talking to your boss about your workload would be step No. 1. If there's no way around these troubles, try talking to someone else. A counselor for example.

Some stresses are created in our heads. Those tend to stew, boil, and grow into a mountain that was once a molehill. Deep breathing exercises are extremely helpful for people who struggle with this type of stress. Count to three while you inhale. When you exhale, try to let the air out in a big huff. As you start to feel better, count your exhales instead of letting all of your air out quickly.

Kick Your Stress to the Curb

There are stressors in life that we are capable of eliminating. It might not seem like the situation is within your control, but it is. A lot of parents stress over their children, if they're spending enough time with them, if they show their kids enough love, etc. You could be married and stay home as a result. People in those situations feel stress when life gets too busy as they feel they should be able to do and complete everything that life throws at them. They're not working after all, so what's the problem? Stress like this is really helped by talking to someone like a therapist or counselor. Sometimes we need to hear that we're doing a great job and don't need to feel the way we do.

Coping With What Can't Change

It's sad, but there are trials in life that a lot of people go through. These situations can be completely, 100 percent outside of your control. Health conditions, for example. Cancer is a nasty reality. That's just one example. During these times it's wise to be very open and communicate whatever you're feeling with those around you. You may find that there are others out there who have been in your shoes and have tips to help you through this unimaginable time.
