Tips for a Healthier Breakfast
By Sara Butler
Many people argue that breakfast is the most important meal of the day – and there’s a lot of evidence to support that! After all, breakfast fuels your body for the day ahead. If you’re a chronic breakfast dodger, then the first step is to actually start eating breakfast. Once you’re there (or if you’re there already) you can use these easy tips to make your breakfast even healthier!
Make Your Eggs Exciting
Eggs are a breakfast staple. They also happen to be one of the most nutritious foods out there. If you’re looking for ways to add flavor and make them even more nutritious, then you can:
- Make a scramble with spinach, arugula, or kale
- Add a pinch of turmeric, an anti-inflammatory spice
- Make an omelet with avocado and sweet potatoes
You can also kick the health factor up a notch by using olive oil or avocado oil to sauté the vegetables you add to your eggs
Oatmeal
When you think of breakfast, oatmeal is probably one of the first things that pop into your head. You can make your oatmeal a bit healthier by:
- Avoiding quick oats since the fiber has been processed out of them
- Choose steel-cut oats or rolled oats
- Use fresh fruit instead of dried for less sugar
- Add cinnamon, vanilla extract, or cocoa instead of sugar
- Add protein by pairing it was an egg on top or a piece of turkey bacon
Cereal
You don’t have to avoid cereals to stay healthy, though anything with a cartoon animal on the box or cereal filled with marshmallows probably isn’t your best bet. You can make your cereal choices healthier by:
- Reading labels and choosing something low in sugar
- Make sure you’re having the recommended serving size since it’s easy to go overboard with the serving size
- Add some protein with cow’s milk or nut milk, adding nuts or seeds as you wish
Smoothies
Smoothies are popular for breakfast because they’re great on the go and taste fantastic. But you have to make sure your smoothie isn’t just a big sugar bomb. Do this by:
- Using fresh fruit instead of juice
- Blend it and then blend it more to add air so it’s more filling
- To keep you satisfied, add healthy fat such as avocado, coconut oil, chia seeds or peanut butter
Make your breakfast great again with these tips and reap the benefits of starting off your day right!
