Encouraging Healthy Habits with our Children
By Donna Kostiew
It’s that time of year again in which many high school seniors are starting to plan for the next phase of their life. Whether that means joining the workforce, heading to college, or becoming part of the armed forces, it’s definitely an exciting time for all. There are so many decisions to make, and so many changes too. Time will fly, and before many parents even realize it, the moment will come when their children will be out on their own.
I’m fairly certain the majority of these young adults are more than ready for all of the challenges that come with entering this next phase in their lives, but it still may be a good idea to make sure that they have some basic, healthy lifestyle habits well established before they do so.
Before They Fly on Their Own
This new chapter of their life offers so many things to be excited about, but they will need a strong foundation to start with. The following habits will help put them on the path to continued health, happiness, and success, no matter where they are.
- Sleep - The importance of sleep and the benefits to your child’s health can’t be stressed enough. Sleep impacts so many areas of their life, so it is vital that you ensure they are getting enough of it now and are establishing good sleeping habits in the process so that they will continue to do so when on their own. Sleep helps to enhance memory, promote creativity, maintain weight, manage stress, and improve the body’s overall health and wellness.
- Diet - The sooner you teach your children how to eat healthy, the better. Teach them how to shop and cook on their own, but also, don’t forget to teach them how to order nutritiously when eating out.
- Exercise - Most young adults will have a busy schedule and can often be overwhelmed by their new responsibilities. By establishing a healthy fitness routine before they leave the nest, they will be more likely to continue with it when they are making their own decisions. Encourage your child to seek the student fitness center if at college, or to take breaks during their workday to fit in some kind of movement.
- Organization - Teaching your children how to become and stay organized will be extremely helpful for the time that they are at school or are starting their new career. It will also be especially beneficial if they are moving into their own place and need to stay on top of bills and rent.
- Health - It’s never too early to start taking care of yourself, and pretty soon, your child will have to do it completely on their own anyway. Teach them how to fill out medical forms, how to keep track and speak clearly to their doctors about any symptoms they may have when sick, and how to maintain their health with vitamins and supplements
It is good to dream big, and many dreams will be achieved during this period of your child’s life. They will come to learn what they are made of, so getting them started with the right foundation is of the utmost importance.
