Getting to the Core of Good Health

By Donna Stark

I have two daughters who spend an awful lot of time working on their abs at the gym. My oldest daughter does it because she is heavily into fitness and is training for a competition right now. My youngest daughter does it simply because she wants to look good when it's time to pull out the bathing suits. I guess any reason to work on your body is a good reason, but it's especially so when you are working on your body's main source of power ... your core.

The Core Truth

Truth be told, there is more to your core than just looking good for those summertime pictures by the pool. And although that's an important factor for many (my daughter included), your core definitely plays a more vital role in your life than that. Take a look at some of the reasons why you may want to consider strengthening your core muscles.

  • Pain - Improves support for the spine which helps to reduce the risk of back pain
  • Posture - Significantly impacts your posture and decreases the strain on your spine
  • Athletic performanc- Improves your overall fitness which can lead to a reduction in injuries
  • Breathing - Improves the respiratory function of your body
  • Balance - Helps to increase balance, stability, and body control
  • Movement - Keeps your body aligned for optimal mobility and joint function
  • Cognitive function - Supports an aligned spine which allows your brain to receive communications more efficiently

Your core muscles play a vital role in your everyday life. From rolling out of bed and getting dressed for work, to the moment you put your head on the pillow and close your eyes for the night, they are literally engaged with nearly every movement your body makes during the day.

How to Strengthen Your Core

It's important to take care of and strengthen your core muscles, but strengthening them is going to take more than a few crunches each week. You can always look up core exercises and ab workouts online, or join a gym and get help from a trainer, but if you are like me and you hate doing planks and crunches, why not try something different? You can get a great core workout by joining a fitness class or playing a sport! Here are a few of the top suggestions for physical activities that can produce killer abs.

  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Kayaking
  • Swimming
  • Cross country skiing
  • Soccer
