Keeping Your Health Goals During Summer

When we think of summer, most of us think of outdoor fun. We picture ourselves swimming, hiking, cycling, exploring, and playing. We plan for busy days, constant activity, and lots of exercise. So it makes perfect sense that by the end of the summer, we should have slim bodies and lean muscles. After all, the non-stop craziness of participating in one activity after the next is sure to help us lose at least a couple of pounds, right? But then reality hits, and come Labor Day, we realize our shorts aren't fitting us the way they used to. In fact, they actually feel a little tight! That wasn't supposed to happen!

Realities of Summer

We certainly imagined a picture-perfect summer, didn't we? But summer isn't always how we imagine it to be and many of our summer plans don't go the way we picture them to. That day of surfing may have turned into a day laying out on the beach for you and that family hike may have been cut short because your sweet kids wouldn't stop fighting! See how reality steps in where it shouldn't? The good news is that it's easy to avoid the problems that reality can bring if we know what to look out for. Here are some simple ways to do so.

  • Make plans - If you don't have a daily plan of action, it's easy to spend more time than you want moving back and forth between the couch and the computer, and snacking like there's no tomorrow. Avoid wasting your time like this and filling your belly with unhealthy food by knowing exactly what you want to do, creating a specific plan to accomplish it, and staying busy. Sure, you can sit down and relax throughout the day, just don't turn it into a full-time job!
  • Create structure - It is easy to stay up late and sleep in the next morning if you don't have school or work to get to, so try to maintain some amount of structure during the summer months. Continue to wake up at the same time each day, eat your meals at set times, schedule your workouts, and follow your normal bedtime routines. By bringing structure into your days, you'll be sure to eat better and stay in motion.
  • Beat the heat - Don't let the summer heat put your plans on hold. Stay active by choosing to do something else, indoors! Consider an afternoon of bowling, head to the gym, enjoy an indoor swimming pool, or challenge yourself on an indoor climbing wall instead!

Staying a Step Ahead of Reality

By remaining focused and intentional with your actions, you can end up just as healthy, or maybe even healthier, than what you were when summer began! So continue with those plans you made and do everything you can to keep the harsh realities of life out of them!
