Busy? Slow Down and Enjoy More Out of Your Life

By Donna Stark

One of the most common problems among people today is the constant feeling of always being busy. We sacrifice precious time with family and friends because we are too busy. We can't find time to exercise or cook healthy meals at home because we are too busy. In fact, some of us even have trouble getting to bed on time and falling asleep because, you guessed it, we're too busy. But how in the world did we all become so darn busy? And why do we continue at this pace of life when we know it doesn't do us any favors?

Create a New Habit

You've created this lifestyle for yourself so it makes sense then that you should be able to "uncreate" it as well, don't you think? But in order to do that, we need to look at some of the reasons that may have gotten you here in the first place.

  • Saying yes too often - It's important to put your physical, emotional, and relationship needs first, before those of the person asking you for the favor. So give a lot of consideration to the request and make sure you are saying yes for the right reasons. It won't always be the end of the world if you say no.
  • Giving in to fear - Afraid you won't make everyone around you happy? Afraid you aren't making enough money? Fear is a great motivator to keep busy, but at what cost to the other important components of your life? Sure, you need to pay the bills and sometimes, you are the only one around to take care of things, but not everything deserves all of your attention all of the time. It may take some practice, but it would be better if you could focus on those things that have the biggest impact on your life.
  • Avoiding the important things - Are you keeping yourself busy with one task after the next because you are trying to avoid dealing with the really important, hard, and scary stuff of life? Well, you are not alone! Many people do this as a way of coping with certain situations but it doesn't necessarily make that situation disappear. As hard as it may be, try to carve out some time to deal with what you are trying to avoid with healthier avenues, such as journaling, talking to someone, or seeking outside help.

Slowing Down

The suggestions above may take some time to implement, but they will definitely help you "uncreate" the busy life that you now have. Take the time to slow down time and enjoy the new lifestyle ahead of you!
