Start Improving Your Memory Today!
By Donna Stark
We all have two types of people in our lives. The first type is the friend with a great memory. This is the person who doesn't forget birthdays, can repeat all the lyrics from every song they have ever listened to, and remembers specific comments said to them as far back as the first grade.
The second type of person is the one who is the complete opposite of that. This person has trouble with names, forgets why they entered a room, and can't even remember what they ate for lunch. You may think that the second person is the only one that needs to work on their memory skills, but the truth is, we should all be giving our brains a daily workout!
Take a look at the following tips on how to keep your brain engaged and sharp.
Learn New Things
Your brain loves to be stimulated and learning a new skill or retaining new information is the best way to do that! Whether you improve your computer skills, take a dance class, try a new recipe, or learn a language, challenging your brain with something different will make a huge difference in how you feel and think!
Put Pen to Paper
In addition to improving memory, increasing communication skills, and boosting brain activity, writing as often as you can will also help you stay connected to others. Have you ever wanted to write a creative story about your life or express yourself through poetry? Do you have a handful of grandchildren who would love to receive a letter from you? If so, grab your pen and get busy!
Skip Technology
There once was a time when we actually had to remember the phone numbers of our friends and when we didn't have interactive maps in the palm of our hand. And guess what. We survived ... and our brains were healthier for it. So, why don't you ditch your technology and go back to those golden days? Use what you already have and try to challenge your brain throughout the day with simple memory tasks.
Read Every Day
Reading is a great way to increase your vocabulary, reduce memory decline, and sharpen your concentration. Establish a new habit and find something to read every day. Here are some fun suggestions.
- Join a book club
- Read to your children or grandchildren
- Enjoy your coffee with the morning paper
- Volunteer at your local library
- Sign up for a magazine subscription
- Keep a book on your nightstand
