How to Properly Stretch Before a Workout

Stretching properly before a workout can make all the difference when it comes to how much good you get from your exercise routine. It can prevent injury, deepen the burn, and get your muscles prepped for ultimate use. With all of the good that comes from a proper stretch, it is shocking to find out the huge number of people that skip this very important step. In order to make the most of your exercise routine, check out these basic tips for how to stretch properly before engaging in your workout.

Stretch Every Area

Don’t worry; you don’t have to spend an hour stretching every teeny tiny muscle. It is a good idea, however, to spend a little time with each part of the body, even if you are not specifically working that spot. Stretch the legs and glutes,  arms, back, abdominals, and even your neck. When you are working the legs, give that area a little bit of extra attention. Stretching not only loosens the muscles, but it also signals your body to send oxygen, which will prove helpful as you workout.

Don’t Push

A very famous fitness professional gives some great advice when it comes to stretching. He stresses that stretching is not about pushing; it is about allowing. If your muscle is too tight, don’t push. Allow your body to relax on its own. Stay in that position for longer, even if you don’t feel like you are getting anywhere. Don’t fight the stretch. Go with it! This concept may be difficult to grasp at the beginning, but once you master the concept, you will never stretch in any other way.

Take Your Time

Do your absolute best not to rush your stretch. Take your time and give your muscles the attention they deserve. Rushing through the stretching routine can lead to more injury as the result of an incomplete or inadequate stretch. It can be really tempting to “get it over with,” but try to look at it as a crucial part of your workout instead of something to rush through.

Find a Good Routine

Finding a good stretching routine is easier than you think. A quick internet search can give you some great ideas. You may even find a complete routine from start to finish with tips and tricks to make it better. If you need more help than that, get to your local gym and ask a fitness professional for some guidance. Most will be happy to get you started down the right path.

In future workouts, make sure that stretching is a top priority. It can only help to protect your body and enhance your workout further. Stretching is one of the most important aspects of working out, so use these tips to stretch properly and effectively for your workout routine.
