Need Better Sleep? Try This
By Virginia Laird
Do you struggle to get good sleep? You are not alone. There are millions who report struggling to either fall asleep or to stay asleep each night. If this describes you, it may be time to look for the advice of sleep professionals to help you meet your sleep needs. These experts suggest that the average adult should make a goal to get at least six hours of sleep each night. And yet, there are many who require much more than this. If you find yourself falling short of this goal, it is imperative that you begin taking a few steps to help you get plenty of sleep. A few tips these experts suggest include:
- Establish a bedtime routine
- Cut back of caffeine
- Make time to exercise
Establish a Bedtime Routine
According to research a bedtime routine can be helpful when trying to relax the mind and body. Sleep experts say that your routine should be no longer than 20 minutes and should only include activities that are relaxing. These activities can include reading, stretching, or any other peaceful activity. Consider giving this a try today before you head to bed.
Cut Back on Caffeine
While you may enjoy the crisp taste of your favorite soda, it can prove to be slightly harmful to your ability to find the sleep you need. Caffeine is scientifically proven to hamper the body's ability to relax and shut down for sleeping. Health and wellness experts advise those who indulge often in caffeine to stop consuming it at least four hours prior to your bedtime.
Make Time to Exercise
The benefits of a good workout routine are many. Exercise can help manage your weight, improve your health, and release stress and tension in the body and mind. For this reason, sleep experts advise that it can be wise to find time to exercise for at least 30 minutes each evening. For some this may be a brisk walk or jog through the neighborhood. Still, others may choose to go for a swim, take a fitness class, or go for a bike ride. Whatever you choose to do to get in some exercise, make sure you start making the time today.
Armed with the advice from these experts you are sure to be able to begin getting the sleep you need and want.
