The More You Move The More Motivated You Will Be
By Sandy Schroeder
Often we start the day with good intentions, planning to walk on the treadmill or do some simple stretches, but then something happens. In today's chaotic world, all sorts of demands can intervene, pushing aside our daily exercise.
If this sounds all too familiar, the New York Times assures us it is a very common situation right now. However, they tell us if we get moving we are apt to continue moving. When we actually get out there, the endorphins that kick in to make us feel great will motivate us to keep right on going. They say a brief burst of activity, as little as four seconds, kicks the metabolism into activity.
The trick is to find that kickoff button, which is not always easy, but well worth the effort. Here are some suggestions to make daily exercise happen.
Find a workout buddy - When you may not feel like exercising, your exercise buddy might show up and help you get moving. Or vice versa. You may wake up ready to go and jog over to your buddy's house to get them moving.
Pick the most fun exercises - This is no time to be hard on yourself. Single out the fitness routines that you enjoy the most. Time on your yoga mat may be magic, or an early morning run may set the tone for the whole day. Others love watching their favorite shows as they pedal along on their stationary bike.
Choose the most comfortable times - If you find the ideal time of day to exercise, it may become as automatic as brushing your teeth. When it feels right, it will happen.
Actually schedule the time - Slot in fitness routines in the same way that you fit other commitments into your schedule.
Try something new - This may be a great time to try something new like tai chi online classes, new strength routines, or online ballet barre exercises. Adding a treadmill or yoga mat to your family room, or setting up practice areas for hoops or soccer outside, might become a daily destination.
Do a self-check - Now that you are eager to exercise, take a good look at what's needed. Want to lose that extra belly fat, or that extra 10 pounds? Really want to tone your arms and legs? Looking for a better overall body image as summer approaches? Pick the exercises to do the job and get started. Once you are moving, you may be much more likely to keep on going.
