Find the Joy in Running

By Donna Stark

Looking back to my childhood, I can vividly picture myself running everywhere. In fact, running was second nature to my friends and I. We ran during recess, we ran during sports practices, and when we were teenagers, we ran after boys. There never seemed to be a day that didn't include running, but all joking aside (the boys), it really does seem like running was a whole lot easier then than now. Do you find that running has gotten harder too as you have aged? Well, you certainly don't have to run for exercise, but if you do, it should be at least somewhat joyful, don't you think?

Finding the Joy in Running

There are so many emotional and physical benefits that come with running. Some people even claim that the more you run, the easier it becomes, and for many, that is usually the case. But for others, finding the joy in running can prove to be difficult. If you are one of those others, take a look at the following tips on how to enjoy the sport of running more than you do now.

  • Slow down - If you are new to running, you will want to start off slowly and build from that point on. Your body needs time to get used to the new aerobic workout and adapt to the different way that you are using your muscles. If you feel pain, you are going too hard.
  • Listen to music - Music is a great motivator, so create that awesome playlist and hit the road. Customize the songs to the intensity of your workout or use the time wisely and listen to some podcasts. Just be sure that you can still hear what is going on around you.
  • Enlist a friend - Running with a friend can make the time fly by and there is no better way to catch up with each other's lives than to log in those miles while you exercise. If you don't have a friend that wants to join you, try asking at your local gym or join a running club.
  • Find the peace - On the other hand, if you are looking for some peace and quiet, there is no better way to find it then to throw on your sneakers and hit a trail. Immerse yourself in the run, lose the stress, and escape the day-to-day pressures of your busy life.

Hit the Ground Running

There are so many benefits that can come from running, but if you can't find the joy in doing so, you may end up losing your motivation to do it. So go ahead and think back to when you were younger. Remember those carefree days when you went through more pairs of sneakers than your mom could ever have imagined, and then grab the ones you wear today and head outside to hit the road!
